I used to think that loving the Lord meant just having deep feelings for the Lord. I figured that those worship songs that we sing came from hearts that truly understand and love, so I wanted to feel that way. I wanted to have that thing which made such beautiful words flow out of their hearts to God. So I used to pray “Lord, help me to love you” and I waited to feel something. What I’m realizing is that, you know how we say to people that love is so much more than a feeling? It applies to God too! Loving is deliberate. God commands us to love Him. That means it’s not something that will just come upon you; it’s a decision you make. So how do you love Him? His word says that if you love Him, you’ll keep His commands; that’s one way to show love. Keep God’s commands and do everything as though you were doing it for the Lord, as though the God of all creation were present and inspecting your heart and your service (He is, actually). Love Him in your obedience, love Him in your worship, love Him in your giving and love Him in your living. The further you go with God, the deeper your love for Him grows. So, don’t wait to feel something, start loving!
